What is Childcare Subsidy (CCS)?

The Child Care Subsidy (CCS) is a government-funded program in Australia that provides financial assistance to families to help cover the costs of approved child care. The goal of the program is to make child care more affordable and accessible to families, particularly those who are working, studying, or looking for work. The amount of financial assistance a family can receive depends on factors such as family income, hours of care required, and the type of child care service used.

How does the Child Care Subsidy work?

The Child Care Subsidy (CCS) works by reducing the out-of-pocket costs for families who use approved child care services. The amount of CCS a family is eligible for is determined by several factors, including the family's combined taxable income, the number of hours of care required, and the type of care being used (such as long day care, family day care, or in-home care).

To receive CCS, families need to be assessed and deemed eligible by the Australian government. The assessment is based on information provided by the families, including their income, and the number of hours of care they require. Once a family is approved, they can start claiming the CCS on their approved child care fees. The CCS is paid directly to the child care service to reduce the fees charged to families.

It's important to note that families must use approved child care services to be eligible for the CCS and that the CCS only covers a portion of the total cost of care, meaning families may still have some out-of-pocket expenses.

Whats the Child Care Subsidy Percentage

The percentage of Child Care Subsidy (CCS) that a family is eligible for depends on their combined taxable income and the number of hours of approved child care they use per week. The CCS is calculated using a sliding scale based on family income, with families earning lower incomes receiving a higher percentage of the total child care fees.

The maximum CCS rate for families earning less than $66,958 per annum is 85% of the actual fee charged for child care services, up to a hourly fee cap. The hourly fee cap is currently $12.75 for center-based day care, $10.90 for family day care, and $10.70 for outside school hours care.

For families earning above $66,958 per annum, the CCS rate starts to reduce and the hourly fee cap also decreases. The CCS rate eventually reaches a minimum of 20% of the actual fee charged for families earning over $352,458 per annum.

It's important to note that the above information is based on the current CCS rules and is subject to change. Families are encouraged to visit the Australian Government's Department of Education, Skills and Employment website for up-to-date information on the CCS.

What age is best to start preschool?

Preschool is typically recommended for children between the ages of 3 and 4 years old. However, the specific age at which a child should start preschool can depend on several factors, such as the child's individual development, local preschool programs, and the family's needs and preferences. Some preschool programs offer classes for children as young as 2 years old. It is best to consult with a pediatrician and consider the individual needs and readiness of the child before making a decision.

Does the service offer extended hours of care?

It depends on the specific preschool program you are asking about. Some preschools offer extended hours of care, such as before- and after-school care, while others have more limited hours of operation. You can contact the preschool directly to inquire about their specific hours of operation and any additional care options that they may offer.
